Understanding When and How Your Tires Should Be Rotated

Tire rotations help tires to extend the usable life of tires by ensuring they wear evenly. On most cars, the front or rear tires will wear out more quickly than the other two. Additionally, uneven wear due to misalignment or worn out suspension parts can be mitigated by rotating the tires to a different position on the vehicle. There are several different tire rotation patterns that we use at Jamie’s Tire & Service in Dayton, Ohio. Different drivetrains require different rotation patterns to ensure that tires are kept facing the correct direction. What are the different tire rotation patterns used on cars, trucks, and SUVs today? Let’s take a look at each different type of rotation.

Rotation Patterns for Cars and Trucks

Forward Cross

Forward cross is the most common tire rotation pattern and is used primarily on front wheel drive cars. In this pattern, the rear tires are put on the opposite side of the front, and the front tires are moved straight back to the rear. This pattern is helpful when the rear tires are showing uneven wear because it changes the direction of rotation of the tires.

X-Pattern Rotation

With an X pattern rotation, the front tires are crossed to the opposite side on the rear, and the rear tires are moved to the opposite side on the front. This pattern is used for both all wheel drive cars and when there is uneven wear on all 4 tires.

Rearward Cross Rotation

Rearward cross works the same as forward cross, but in reverse. With a rearward cross rotation, the rear tires are moved directly to the front, and the front tires are placed on opposite sides of the rear.

Front-to-Rear Rotation

Front to rear rotations are used for vehicles with directional tires. Directional tires cannot be crossed like other tires, and must stay oriented in the same direction to avoid damaging and causing improper wear on the tread. Many performance cars use front to rear rotations to help tires wear evenly and keep them pointed in the correct direction.

Side-to-Side Rotation

Side-to-side rotations are used on cars with staggered wheel or tire sizes. These wheels cannot be moved between the front and rear, and need to be kept either in the front or the rear.

How Often Should You Have Your Tires Rotated?

Tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles or so. At Jamie’s Tire & Service we recommend having them rotated every or every other oil change. If it’s time to have your tires rotated, give the experienced mechanics at Jamie’s Tire & Service a call! We’d be happy to help you get the most out of your tires.
